Lithium compounds namely Lithium Cobalt Oxide and Lithium Iron Phosphate used in battery applications have specific particle size distribution requirements. The Mikro ACM® Air Classifying Mill SF is used to grind lithium carbonate and produce the specific particle size distribution required for use in high performance Lithium Ion Batteries. Ultra-fine lithium powders used in Lithium Ion battery applications, result in improved battery performance. Performance improvements include higher useable capacity, longer life cycles, faster charging rates, higher efficiency, consistent discharge rates and size and weight advantages. The Mikro ACM® Air Classifying Mill SF is a special variation of the ACM and can produce an extremely fine and superior particle size distribution when compared to other types of air classifying mills.
Lithium is a relatively rare element that is found in very small concentrations in many different rocks and also in brines. Very few of these sources have potential commercial value. The largest reserves of commercially available lithium salts are found in the brine deposits in dry sea beds located in a few South American countries where the US Geological Survey estimates the total reserves to be in excess of 12 million tons.
Since World War II the production and use of Lithium compounds have greatly increased. The main uses of Lithium compounds include Lithium oxide and Lithium carbonate for use in the production of ceramics and glass, Lithium carbonate for use in the production of Lithium ion batteries and Lithium Stearate for use in lubricants.
Mikro ACM® Air Classifying Mill – Superfine
The Mikro ACM® Air Classifying Mill is an air swept mechanical impact mill designed to grind lithium materials. Its durability, reliability, and precision are what make it one of the most popular industrial workhorses for fine size reduction of lithium materials.
Hosokawa’s Air Classifying Mills are a proven technology for processing lithium materials for nearly 20 years. The ACM also has numerous applications with food, pharmaceutical, mineral, chemical and cosmetic materials.

Alpine® AFG Fluidized Bed Jet Mill
The Alpine AFG Fluidized Bed Jet Mill uses a set of nozzles to accelerate compressed gas to the center of the grinding chamber. Lithium feed materials become entrained in the gas stream and collide resulting in particle-on-particle size reduction. Since the lithium particles are grinding against each other and not against internal mill surfaces, ultra-pure lithium materials can be produced.
Hosokawa’s Fluidized Bed Jet Mill produces some of the finest lithium compounds available for applications requiring ultra-low contamination. The AFG can also be used for milling hard minerals, abrasive chemicals and ultra-fine pharmaceuticals.
